How we roast

We hand-roast our coffee in small batches to develop delicious flavour and aroma for each individual coffee.

The art of coffee roasting

Roasting coffee is a skill that can take years to perfect. It's a bit like cooking: if you throw food in the oven, set the timer and come back when it pings, your dinner will probably taste ok but it's not going to win any awards. A good chef prepares food using all their senses; smell, taste, sight, etc. They wouldn't dream of leaving the food to cook itself and hope for the best. Well coffee beans are no different. That's why despite it taking us more time and effort, we use all those senses to roast by hand in small batches. It typically takes 10 - 15 minutes to roast a batch of coffee but every batch is different. It's the last minute that makes the crucial difference and can end up with wildly different results. We put all our care and attention into that last minute so you are never left disappointed.

We believe roasting is a unique skill that is easy to pick up, but takes years to master. Thankfully we've been roasting for years. All the coffees you buy from our website are hand-roasted to order. Our talented roasters don't rely on clever machinery to run this key process. Instead they roast using all of their senses. Explore more stories and discover what goes into your bag of Union Hand-Roasted Coffee.
